The Homeowner’s Guide to Choosing the Best Carpets for your Renovation

Best Carpet for Renovation

Is replacing the carpets part of your upcoming home renovation project? Then you’re in luck, as this article will explain everything that you need to know about choosing the best carpets to boost the interior design of your upcoming home renovation.

Every carpet has its own individual features that can dramatically affect the quality and final look of your renovation. It’s easy to see why carpets can have such a significant impact on the look and feel of your home, since carpets usually take up a fair amount of square footage.

Choosing the wrong kind of carpet can make your home drab and dreary, or even set the stage for cheap tackiness if the pattern is too garish or the quality too poor, so you need to make the right decision if you want your renovation efforts to be worth the investment.

Determine what your carpet will need to withstand over time.

Choosing the right kind of carpet can either make or break your renovation, so you need to ensure that you can opt for the most suitable flooring to match your unique wants and needs.

Areas such as hallways and staircases need super strong carpets that can stand the test of time, otherwise it will begin to wear down and look unsightly after just a few months of use.

If you are installing carpet in bedrooms, you’ll want a carpet that is plush and soft to the feel as it will be the first thing you step onto for the next 20+ years.

If you are working with a good interior designer, you may want to consider different carpet types in different areas of your home, as each space will be maximized to its full potential by investing in the most suitable flooring. Be sure you are careful though; you don’t want to end up with a patchwork looking house. We highly recommend the use of a professional designer to help with all selections to avoid costly mistakes.

Being green is recommended.

Recent trends would suggest that homeowners are opting towards more environmentally friendly carpet types to help cut their carbon footprint. But another reason this could be a good option is that “green” carpet substantially reduces offgasing odours.

Look for carpet that carries “Green Label Plus” certification or has met similar standards when installing carpet – especially in your bedroom. Carpet offgasing can be uncomfortable in any room, but as most people sleep seven to eight hours in their bedrooms every night, so indoor air quality is critical for that room.

Knowing what to look for will help you make the best decision when selecting carpet for your renovation. Below we review the most popular carpet types to help you to make the best decision based on trends, styles and lifestyle needs.

Choose a carpet fibre.

There are four basic types of carpet fibre, and we recommend you start here when trying to make the best carpet decision for your home.

Nylon

Nylon is a durable and stain resistant carpet fiber that is often treated with stain protection. Nylon is the perfect choice for homes with pets and children, or anyone whose home sees a large amount of traffic. Nylon is ideal for hallways and stairs that get used frequently.

Polyester

Polyester provides a more luxurious look and feel, and it generally comes in a wide selection of different colours and styles. Polyester can be good value for homes that see a normal amount of traffic as it is often the most affordable carpet type.

Olefin

Olefin is resistant against stains and moisture; however, it isn’t as strong as nylon and polyester so does not offer the same wearability. Olefin works best for loop pile construction or high/dense cut piles and would go well in a low-traffic room such as an office.

Wool

Wool is favoured because of its natural beauty and soft touch, but although it has some natural soil resistance, it is not inherently stain resistant, making it a poor choice if you have pets or kids. Wool is still a hard-wearing and durable carpet material, as its quality construction can mean it lasts for a considerable length of time. Wool is likely the most expensive carpet type that you can choose to invest in.

Carpet texture is important

Once you know what fibre you want to go with, you will want to choose the best texture for the room and your lifestyle.

Cut Pile

Cut pile carpet is made from yarns which have been cut at their ends, leaving a super soft feel that your feet will love. The cushion of a cut pile carpet makes it an ideal option for the most comfortable areas inside your home, such as your bedroom or living room.

Cut pile carpet comes in five main styles, including: velvet, saxony, frieze, shag, and cable. The main difference between these styles is the amount of twist in the yarns, which in turn impacts on the carpet’s total durability.

Loop

Loop carpet utilizes yarns that are looped and fully uncut on the carpet’s carpet’ surface. The height of the pile can be low and tightly packed to form a more luxurious high-level pile that is strong and maintains soil hiding abilities. Loop carpet is perfect for areas that see heavy traffic, and Berber is the most popular style of Loop construction in today’s modern market.

Cut Loop

Cut loop carpet has a combination of differing high-cut tufts and lower loops in a range of sculptured patterns. This carpet is coming back into style with many new patterns and textures catching the eyes of homeowners.

Cut loop carpets offer great performance overall, but they can be slightly less durable when compared with normal loop carpets and tend to show wear more easily. It’s a good choice if you want a high-end-looking den or lower-use basement.
